Demo EV: Achieving electro mobility
The European Union (through its Life+ programme) and the Government of Malta financed this ambitious project to manage and maintain a national charging infrastructure known as ‘Demo EV’.
The aim of the project is to increase the opportunities for a carbon neutral road transportation system by putting into practice, testing, evaluating and disseminating a number of actions with respect to the achievement of electro mobility. This will decrease the level of dependency on internal combustion engines and thus improve air quality levels.
The overall solution incorporated a web management platform with a physical roll-out of charging units in various localities around the islands to provide the full lifecycle relating to the charging of electric vehicles.
The web-platform relies on geo-located points and returns the status of the various charging points. Through a secure e-account, drivers can pre-book charging slots and securely authenticate themselves via RFID when they drive-up to the charging stations. Utilising mobile-friendly visualisation techniques a user-dashboard was deployed to allow drivers to access booking history, payments and lodge requests. System administrators have access to reporting and statistical data and business-intelligence layers which allow them to optimise the product’s offering.
The system is itself integrated to a secure payment gateway for card processing as well as RWE system engines (RWE is one of Europe’s five leading electricity and gas companies which provided technology for the charging units).
ICON is responsible for the ranking and visibility of the customer portal as well as all support and maintenance operations. All infrastructure utilises Microsoft Azure cloud technology for improved stability and performance. The solution provided by ICON has assisted in the journey towards electro-mobility and has positively contributed towards a healthier environment and more efficient use of technology in transport.
DemoEV has won the prestigious award for Best eGovernment Initiative at the MCA eBusiness Awards 2015.
