Forget about fluff and write valuable content for your readers.
Web writing is more than just writing a marketing brochure and placing it online. It is also more than a random list of bullet points about a particular subject. Follow our top 10 tips to make your web content more appealing to your readers as well as for you to enjoy the writing experience.
  • Never copy your print marketing. One of the most common mistakes that marketers make is to copy and paste marketing materials from brochures onto the website. Writing for the web needs to be different from print and the writing needs to reflect this.
  • Write simpler. Writing for the web does not have to be rocket science. It is a known fact that your text will be read by people with all levels of the English language so write to a lower level audience to keep everyone interested.
  • Write in a pyramid style. Write your most important points at the start. Then move on to write more openly about the subject. This is useful to your readers as most of them will skim through the content.
  • Resist marketing jargon. If you are trying to influence your readers into making a particular action they are less likely to act if your page feels like fluff. Add value to your content.
  • Keep it short. Keep your content to under 10 000 characters per page as most of your readers will not read long stories.
  • Focus on your readers. Although SEO is important to drive readers to your site do not make your writing too obvious that it is geared towards search engines as otherwise you will lose readers.
  • Shorter paragraphs. The shorter your content is the more your readers are likely to read it.
  • Get Feedback. The web is interactive and your writing should reflect that. Asking for feedback is an excellent way to get your readers’ opinion.
  • Images. Images should be used to expand on the text not just to embellish the document.
  • Know your audience. Have fun with your writing and your readers will enjoy reading your content. Write with your audience in mind.
