While a lot of stress was put on how to gain rankings in the past these days avoiding penalties is the number 1 rule to avoid having your website affected.

Over the past year many websites have been hit by various iterations when Google Panda hit the web with new updates.  With a new set of major changes in the algorithms a more potent Google Penguin has hit out with many SEOs and webmasters seeing their rankings drop under the latest update.

Originally called “Google Webspam Algorithm Update” the new Google Penguin has penalised angry SEOs for spamming tactics including buying links spamming sites with keywords and/or producing thin content.

While a lot of stress was put on how to gain rankings in the past these days avoiding penalties is the number 1 rule to avoid having your website affected.
If your site has been hit by Google Penguin either because you were working against the Google guidelines or you’ve been filling your content with unnatural links keyword stuffing hidden texts and malware it is important that you take the following steps.

Step 1- Redesign your content
Freshen up your content by varying keywords and writing content specifically for humans and not robots.

Step 2 – Remove bad links
If you have been putting up unnatural links make sure you remove these yourself or by contacting your webmaster and asking for the links to be removed. You will not be able to remove all of your inbound links but you could at least show Google that you are trying.

Step 3 – Promote your brand profile
Many new websites lack a brand identity and these mostly entail new businesses. They need to establish themselves as a brand and distribute their name out there rather than focusing on getting the best service to rank at the top.

Step 4 – Learn your Guidelines
Make sure you learn Google’s guidelines by heart. This will not guarantee you will rank on top but it will surely guarantee that you will not be penalised in the future.
