Today marks the launch of the ‘ePortfolio for Postgraduate Medical Training‘, a software application which serves as an educational tool to aid the assessment and development of medical trainees and specialists.
Commenting on the launch of the software application ‘ePortfolio’, The Hon. Chris Fearne, Parliamentary Secretary for Health in the Government of Malta, clarified that post graduate medical training is the fulcrum of quality in advanced medical preparation in Malta.
Hon. Dr. Chris Fearne MP.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Government of Malta
Built by ICON, ePortfolio is a web-based application built on the Microsoft platform to support and manage postgraduate training programs in Malta. “As exciting new healthcare opportunities increase in Malta, ePortfolio presents a formidable tool to assist Malta’s growth in this sector” commented Hon. Fearne.
The Postgraduate Medical Training Centre was setup in 2008 by the Government of Malta and presently supports 500 doctors in the acquisition of medical knowledge in 33 specializations ranging from anesthetic training to psychiatry.
“The ePortfolio places postgraduate trainees at the centre of the learning experience.”
The ePortfolio promotes active learning and assists in continuous professional development of highly specialised knowledge provision in the medical sector. The software product provides accountability in the recording of competences, learning tools to assist in the postgraduate journey as well as offering a marketing tool for doctors to make their achievements public. Dr. Ray Galea, Head of the Postgraduate Medical Centre in Malta explained that ICON provided a “user-centered application which is extremely user-friendly and which offers the Government of Malta multiple in-app customisation options to improve the ePortfolio over time. This system has placed Malta at par – and in some areas beyond – other European countries who already use ePortfolio systems. The provided tool places the postgraduate trainees at the centre of the learning experience whist supporting quality assurance and efficiency over dispersed electronic methods of managing data.”

Dr. Galea explained “we were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a company as passionate on the subject as ICON which eagerly supported us through the entire lifecycle from requirements-gathering to post-deployment support.”
ICON is a software development company based in Malta. It is a Microsoft partner and an ISO 9001:2008 certified company.
The ePortfolio project is part financed by the EU’s Operational Programme II, European Social Fund (ESF 1.211).
