ICON is delighted to announce that the DemoEV project, conducted in collaboration with Solar Solutions Ltd and the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure has won the prestigious award for Best eGovernment initiative at the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) eBusiness Awards 2015.  The 5th edition of the MCA eBusiness awards took place yesterday evening at the Intercontinental Hotel, St Julian’s to celebrate the best technological achievements of 2015.

MCA eBusiness awards

The MCA eBusiness Awards recognise Malta’s most talented IT professionals who make the best use of technology to achieve unique business initiatives.  The awards aim to inspire all those in the eBusiness industry to think and work in creative, innovative and unique ways in order to facilitate economic growth and social development.

Furthermore, the Best eGovernment Initiative award recognises the best web technology solution by a Government entity which enables the government to provide improved services to citizens, businesses and other entities.  Two of ICON’s projects were nominated for this award: ePortfolio and DemoEV.

The main objective of the DemoEV project is to increase the opportunities for carbon-neutral road transportation by facilitating the use of electro mobility.  The project involved the development of a web management platform developed by ICON along with the installation of vehicle charging units in several locations across Malta by Solar Solutions Ltd.  The platform displays the precise locations of the charging units as well as their status, and allows users to pre-book charging slots through a secure eAccount. This leads to improved air quality by decreasing the use and dependency on internal combustion engines which eventually create air pollution.

So far, a fleet of 24 fully electric vehicles which clocked a total of 280,000kms have saved 68 tonnes of CO2 emissions and over €21,000 in fuel.  This solution puts Malta at the forefront in the development of innovative solutions to combat the rising levels of pollution across Europe.

Electricvehiclesmalta.eu proved to be an innovative solution for electric vehicle charging booking solutions in Malta, implemented as part of the hugely-successful DemoEV project.  Such solutions pave the way for the future of mobility and transportation in Malta and in Europe.
