Here are the top mistakes on social media that you should avoid:

Not replying. Timeliness is of utmost importance and replying within minutes or hours is crucial to avoid you looking like you are not willing to put in the time for your customers on social media.

Replying with something unrelated. People use social media for a variety of reasons but ultimately use it because it’s fun. Don’t reply with something that looks like a script but rather provide information that is relevant to your customers.

Diverging. If a customer contacts you on a particular social channel use the same channel to reply. There are times when offering a phone number or asking for an e-mail address for further discussion could make sense but where possible stay on the same channel.

Failing to respond. Sometimes customers will use social media as a forum and will post something online about your company whether directly or indirectly. Replying to these posts should be your top priority.

Ignoring one’s mistakes. If you make a mistake online rest assured that customers will not shy away from pointing it out. Acknowledge your mistakes or ask how you can better address the issue. If done properly mistakes will provide you with the opportunity to show how responsive you can be.

Incomplete profiles. Avoid incomplete profiles as you come across as being lazy.

Not interlinking your profiles. It’s the simplest mistake to fix. Make sure all your social network profiles are linked to one another as this will better your network connections.

Avoid self-absorption. About 90% of what you post should include a healthy dose of helpful links while the rest should be directly focused on your company.
