Valletta’s bid to become European Cultural Capital in six years’ time dubbed V18 is not just about being in the spotlight for an entire year in 2018 but also an evolving project that requires ambition and flexibility as it is nearing its goal following the EU pre-selection evaluation panel’s visit to Malta on January 18.
The new website was crafted by ICON precisely to capture this versatility. “Combining a distinct visual flair and multiple layouts to capture both Valletta’s present and its potential future together with ICON’s powerful content management system the portal is an invaluable platform for the V18 organisers to communicate their plans as well as a way for every stakeholder to participate in this national initiative” said Dr.Gege Gatt Director at ICON.
The portal is an open fount of data for the public and media as it spells out the road map to 2018 in a compelling and easily accessible way. Indeed the traditional ‘newspaper’ was a key inspiration to the concept of the site making news areas prominently displayed to immediately update visitors with the latest evolutions in the project.
The news section pulls information not just from Valletta as a candidate Capital but also from across Europe’s other Capitals of Culture. “Being an international platform for communication and sharing the portal informs users about the happenings of other European Capitals participating in the project” explains Mr. David Felice Chairman of the V18 project.
Powerful blogging technology further facilitates conversations to spark off around any relevant topic through the contributions of experts professionals as well as involved citizen groups. The website’s multimedia and social media capabilities allow a rich tapestry of video photos and other types of contributions to form around the site as the online hub of V18.“We have given particular importance to the social media aspect of the project as we believe that it is a fundamental building-block of today’s communication patterns. In this area ICON has proved to be extremely knowledgeable” said Mr. Felice. The V18 site team also ensures that anyone can be kept updated through regular email newsletters that the site provides. On the other side of the coin others that are not yet involved are welcomed into the project through the ‘My Valletta
